FASHION & DESIGN: Sustainable Fashion by EVERYBODY

Heard about EVERYBODY? I hadn’t, until I read a piece about 5 sustainable fashion brands/names in a recent i-D online editorial.

Eco Fashion EVERYBODY IRIS CAROLINA
The founders of EVERYBODY: Iris Alonzo & Carolina Crespo

“EVERYBODY is a clothing and lifestyle goods company inspired by reality–people, cultures, science, history, life.

We are approaching design and manufacturing as a new frontier–conscious of Workers, Ecology and Ideas. To us, that means leading with creativity and ensuring our production is always ethical and as earth-friendly as possible.”
Understanding…

I won’t go in on the definitions of sustainable & eco etc. I’ll allow you to read up on some if your not sure of what it involves when it comes to brands & the future. But, I’ll share some of my thoughts and why EVERYBODY stuck out to me and why they are so fantastic…

I’m know I’m late for the train with this one, but I most definitely couldn’t resit sharing/posting about this brand, as sustainability is a topic that I’m analysing everyday and constantly wondering about. A topic that even I don’t always know where to start, other than making simple changes in my own consumer habits like, taking my own shopping bags to the store and not accepting receipts. The trouble is.. many of us don’t know who or what’s out there to help us begin.

I do in addition also have a larger long term vision that I too hope to one day put in to action. EVERYBODY just helped tick another box to show me that it is possible, while allowing me to see that it’s far wider… It’s about the whole sourcing, manufacturing, selling & recipient process…

Just think…

Along with the rights today that we have in “freedom of speech” – just about, “gender equality in the work force” – just about, and so on… We’ve come to a place in time where we are now, more than ever able to shape and create pathways not only for ourselves and immediate families but for one another and the following (without much interference from higher powers). Maybe they really are allowing us to do all the work, as they know we are fighting for change anyway, so why should they bother stepping in with billions to sort it? Who knows? I’m sure many of us sit here and think it’s the governments job to sort every aspect of  the sustainable/go-eco talk by themselves (at part, a lot of it is their responsibility yes), I’m sure a lot of us think about this. I know I do as I sit here most days myself wondering just that…

However, looking at movements like EVERYBODY simply reiterate to me that it should involve us too and that we should be leading it! We should take as much control in our world’s sustainable living development & growth as we can. Like I said, we are at a time where we have so much movement as free beings that we need to create this pathway ourselves. Of course there will be limitations and hurdles. But it’s us that live the everyday lives. Think about it… If we simply pick up a plastic bag every time we shop and don’t re-use or recycle it, we are actually a part of the problem and already in a negative mindset if we don’t see the value of recycling. Some of the supermarkets are actually giving incentives such as get 5p off your next shop if you return a bag. They are even producing their shopping bags to be recyclable too. So your task is you just need to reuse it or pop it in the right bin to start helping out.

Begin to participate…

Now, as EVERYBODY are a sustainable fashion brand it shows you that you should be concerned that one step further past recycling plastic bags. Sustainable & eco manufacturing can be applied to every step in every industry. EVERYBODY, help to establish the quirk and great need in up cycling, recycling and re-using and they involve so many people and industry sectors whilst doing it. It’s funny how many people will shop a lot of pound & yen at a thrift or vintage shop which is fantastic, but we never really manage to support local developments that could someday go mainstream and be in huge demand. To me, EVERYBODY is the future. It’s so easy to just head to a normal high street fashion brand store and pick something up, but why not begin searching for eco movements such as EVERYBODY, who really make it as clear as day in their intentions for their brand, their manufacturing processes and ultimately their long term intentions for us.

Don’t wait for change, change you…

You may or may not know about my recent stint and now part-time life in Tokyo, Japan… However, upon my recent return to London it confirmed and then sprouted some very much rooted thoughts about life & humanity, that I’ve always had bubbling inside of me as I’ve grown. I’ve now become very much stripped back. I’ve come to question about everything I use; do I need this? and if I don’t, how will I dispose of it? Reason being is Japan is one of the leading nations in taking care of personal and non-personal possessions/items, minimalistic living, design and fashion, and with experiencing that innovative leadership and living it day in and day out over a long period, it opened my mind to so much more and how we should be working together to generally consume less or most definitely consume with long term sustainable intentions.

ART & DESIGN: Julie Zhuo on the Lessons of Good Design — via Design.blog

Sparking wisdom…

A great piece about the idea of a “Good Design”…

My first design job was an internship on Microsoft OneNote. Our intrepid leader was the product founder Chris Pratley, who terrified me the way karaokeing Adele onstage while completely sober is terrifying. My goal that summer was for him to not think I was an idiot, and my strategy to achieve that was to try […]

ART: 花chan Takes Over ETSY…

Wanting to purchase some art by Flower?

So, I’ve finally decided to create an Etsy Store…

I had been getting a few requests via Facebook as to where people can take orders for specific prints, and tbh I didn’t really have anywhere to send anyone. ‘Twas more or less just a custom order option… However, Etsy felt like the logical place to begin.

For those who don’t know, Etsy is a online company that is home to a thriving online marketplace of “craft” featuring jewellers, candlemakers, fashion designers, woodcutters and other artists from around the world. The website allows individuals to create their own shop, sell craft and items to consumers, customise their forum and develop relationships with other areas of expertise such as merchandising companies etc.

It is a fantastic place to begin a shop due to the easy managing and personalisation of your account and especially as those who search and shop on Etsy, use specific and distinctive search tags that enables them to view and search for items and craft they are actually interested in buying. Your images will come up on a feed of much related items and it allows the user to shop around and pick what’s right for them. You can tag, and label your items within the market place (like eBay and Amazon), although the presentation of the search feed decorates and presents craft as it needs to be rather than having your items being placed and missed because of a stagnant usually unrelated search feed of about 50+pages like other online store hosting sites.

Anyway, head over… Take a look… More to come…

ART: Bowie/Collector – David Bowie’s Private Art Collection Goes For Auction

Sotheby’s is set to host a preview and auction for David Bowie’s private art collection in a number of locations over the coming months.

Renowned and global auctioneer art powerhouse, Sotheby’s, will be hosting auction to some of Bowie’s most intimate items from the art world he so very much loved and collected from. Known under many titles – pop icon, artist, actor and magazine editor (the list can go on), our beloved Bowie sadly passed away earlier this year… His artistry reigns on through his own personal works and music and no-one is letting us forget that just yet, as his own personal eclectic art collection is now being opened to the public eye for viewing and it’s collective auction rate is said to be worth millions.

You can take a sneak preview of some of the collection here – It all looks incredibly exciting! It shows us just how deep in to creativity he really was, how willing he was to be fully involved regardless of art medium, regardless of the price, it proves it was what he lived for. Mediums in design range from product and furniture design like sofa’s, to print based works, sculptures and items from world famous artists such as Damien Hirst and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

BLOG: Flower 花 ! Where Have You Been?

New movements…

Damn…

I know guys, I’ve been missing! Well, it is to do with a number of things…

First thing’s first, I’ve planted myself back in the UK officially now, which means… New job & new home! (I miss Japan and will be returning soon – I’ll talk more about that another time).

It’s been a lot. Fun, sad, tiring, exciting – a mixture of emotions. However, it does mean that I’m back and working hard on some new projects & posts for you (and a YouTube channel – not ready just yet!)

I’ve been travelling, attending shows, visiting a lot of galleries, posting up at events but mainly been working on some new art and content for Phoenix Troy of Phoenix + The Flower Girl. My current digital spread on this site just isn’t cutting it. I’m not really a digital art type of girl – I do scan and edit for the sake of online exposure and digital prints but I’m really a hands on kind of artist. I love original feel and I guess that’s just me. So, as it goes I’ve decided to give you some more of my art (finally) and in the mean time work on my own regular exhibits to coincide with what I’m working on, for which I will be looking for other artists (one-off or long term commitment) to get involved… There will be some conditions for the main hub of what I’ll be doing, although I’m very much up for working with anyone in any medium or industry who’s up for some collaboration or projects (contact me via this page or Facebook).

I’ll be posting more information on the exhibits when it is available, however stay tuned for the usual!
